Don Quixote is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Originally published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, the novel is considered a founding work of Western literature and is often said to be the first modern novel. Don Quixote is about an aging Spanish gentleman, Alonso Quijano, who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and decides to become a knight-errant named Don Quixote. With his simple farmer squire, Sancho Panza, he embarks on a series of adventures to revive the age of chivalry, mistaking ordinary things like windmills for giants and engaging in comical misadventures that highlight the conflict between idealism and reality.

Richard Strauss' vivid symphonic poem Don Quixote, tells the tale of Cervantes’ legendary knight through rich orchestral storytelling, featuring Mark Kosower, renowned Principal Cello of the Cleveland Orchestra as Don Quixote and our Principal Violist Brian Hillyard as his loyal squire, Sancho Panza. Strauss' masterwork will be performed by the Yakima Symphony Orchestra on March 14!
